Honoring Local Historic Attraction:
After reading through the KIDS
LOVE Travel Guide for your state, have a teacher choose 5 historic
attractions in your area. Take a class vote on which one site near
your town you want to honor and send the public relations personnel at
that attraction a formal note explaining they have been chosen as your
schools Favorite Local Historic Attraction this year! They will be
thrilled! Ask them to send a representative to receive the award on
the day of the author visit.
What to present the historic attraction?
The expense of a plaque is usually not necessary. Why not instead present
them with an envelope containing students’ drawings and reviews of what
they like best about this attraction (these activities qualify as art and
composition curriculum). Along with the special “envelope”, a school
memento is suggested. Maybe a school spirit t-shirt, sweatshirt or mug.

State History “Characters”:
Organize a contest and have the students dress like Ohio History
characters: Inventors, Presidents, pioneers, American Indians, sailors,
famous athletes, etc. on the day of the event. Have the winning students
be the Author's escort for the day or help present the award to the
Favorite Local Historic Attraction (in costume).

A State Theme Lunch: Ask your
cafeteria if they can serve a special lunch menu on Kids Love State
History Day. Some suggestions are: Stew & corn bread or Biscuits &
Sausage Gravy, the state beverage, sides of important agricultural
products produced in the state (ex. Apples, corn), and finish with a state
theme dessert (state cutout cookies, popular regional candies – ex. Ohio
Buckeye Candy). Some schools ask famous local food companies to donate
snacks or parts of the lunch (examples in Ohio: Bob Evans, Kroger,
Graeters, Donatos, Quaker Oats, Wendys, Smuckers). Possibly decorate the
tables with small vases of the state flower (silk or real).

State History Worksheets: Encourage teachers to integrate the author's books with
the curriculum and to work in the class. Besides the school purchasing a
copy of KIDS LOVE OHIO for each classroom, you may also want to purchase
a copy of the State Big Activity Book for each classroom (wonderful
state history reproducible activity pages).
