(Our Night at the Blue Jackets vs. Detroit Game)
Last night I took the kids to a Columbus Blue Jackets game, and it reminded me why sporting events can be such an incredible memory-maker for families. You don’t have to be a diehard hockey fan to enjoy the energy, the lights, the surprises, and all the “extras” that make the night special. If you’ve been looking for a fun outing that feels bigger than the everyday, an NHL game might be just the ticket.
1) Make Time for the Pre-Event Activities (Totally Worth It!)
One of the best things about attending a Blue Jackets game is that the fun starts long before the puck drops.
Here are a few of our favorites from last night:
⭐ First Game Puck
If it’s your child’s first game, stop by guest services for a “First Game” puck. It’s simple, free, and such a cute keepsake.
⭐ COSI’s “Science of Hockey” Exhibit
This was a surprise hit. Kids get to learn how fast pucks travel, how ice is made, and how gear protects players — all hands-on and interactive.
⭐ Full Hockey Gear Photo Op
There’s a spot where kids can pose behind life-size hockey equipment. My kids thought this was hysterical, and the pictures are priceless.
⭐ Make-Your-Own Sign Station
Markers, posters, stencils — the works. Whether kids want to cheer for their favorite player or just draw, it keeps them busy and pumped up for the game.
⭐ Watch Warm-Ups on the Glass
Seeing the players fly around the ice before the game officially begins? Magical. These usually happen 30-45 minutes before the puck drops. We lined up by Section 116 and got to see plenty of action...and even got on the jumbotron! And here’s an insider tip…
Insider Tip: Bring a Lamb Chop Toy
This is one of those pieces of fan lore that makes sports feel special.
Ivan Provorov (Blue Jackets defenseman) collects Lamb Chop dog toys that fans toss over during warm-ups. He gathers them up, brings them home to his dog, Drake, and donates extras.
It’s adorable, the kids loved being part of it, and it gives them a little mission before the game begins.
2) During the Game: So Much to Do Between the Action
Hockey itself is fast, exciting, and easy for kids to follow, but the downtime is just as fun.
The Blue Jackets do a great job with:
In-arena games
Fan cams
Crowd competitions
Music and dancing
Mascot appearances
There’s always something happening, and it helps keep even younger fans engaged.
3) Pack a Few “Get-the-Wiggles-Out” Items
Even with all the excitement, kids sometimes hit that wall where they just need a distraction. I brought a couple of small toys, and these were a BIG hit:

They’re tiny, fun, and perfect for keeping their hands busy without disturbing people around us.
4) Know Where the Quiet Spaces Are
Loud arenas can be overwhelming for some kids, especially little ones or kids sensitive to noise and crowds.
👍 What to know at Blue Jackets games:
They have designated quiet rooms if someone needs a moment away from the action.
Ushers can provide noise-cancelling headphones upon request — super helpful for keeping the night enjoyable for everyone.
5) Why Sporting Events Make Amazing Family Memories
By the end of the night, the kids were buzzing, exhausted in the happiest way, and full of stories about the players, the games during timeouts, and — of course — throwing a Lamb Chop toy for Provorov.
Sporting events combine excitement, tradition, sensory fun, and a sense of belonging. You’re not just watching a game together — you’re sharing an experience, one your kids will talk about for days (or years!).
And best of all? You get to be right there with them as those memories are made.
