Fall Officially Hits Different: Foliage, Fall Break, and Why This Is THE Month to Plan a Trip

We are officially deep in pumpkin spice everything, and my group chat has turned into a nonstop stream of leaf photos from anyone who's driven north of the state line. I get it. October just hits different. And apparently I'm not the only one feeling it — I looked it up, and travel data is actually showing that this exact week (the week of October 5th) is showing some of the strongest demand for fall travel all season. So if you're feeling the itch to book something right now, that's not just you, that's basically the whole country.

The trending topic: fall break is a real travel window now

Here's something I didn't fully clock until this year: October isn't just "the month after summer ends" anymore, it's become its own legit travel season. A lot of school districts now build in a fall break in October, which opens up a real window that September just doesn't have. Combine that with peak foliage hitting places like Vermont, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and the Smoky Mountains this month, plus cooler (finally!) weather almost everywhere, and it's honestly one of the best times all year to take a trip with kids — smaller crowds, lower prices, and actual sweater weather.

The other big trend I keep seeing: "weekending." Surveys are showing that a huge chunk of travelers this fall are planning shorter, weekend-length trips instead of one big vacation. It fits our life perfectly, honestly — a Friday-to-Sunday foliage drive scratches the same itch as a full week away, minus the stress of taking a ton of time off or blowing up the school-week routine.

Quick heads up if foliage is on your radar

If you're even thinking about a leaf-peeping trip, don't sleep on booking the lodging. The classic spots — Vermont, Asheville, the aspen towns out west — tend to fill up months in advance for peak color weekends, way faster than the flights or the drive itself. Even if you're not ready to commit to exact dates, this is the week to at least check what's still available.

Small local win, if you want one

You don't need to build a whole itinerary around it, but if you're doing a foliage drive or weekend trip, keep an eye out for the little harvest festivals and farm stands that pop up in almost every town this time of year. They're an easy, low-key way to break up a long drive, and honestly some of my favorite trip photos are from a random roadside stand we weren't even planning to stop at.

This week's move

  • ✅ If a foliage trip is on your radar, check lodging availability now — flights can wait, rooms can't

  • ✅ Look up your school's fall break dates (if you haven't already) and see what a 3-4 day trip could look like around them

  • ✅ Ask your kids what they'd want out of a fall weekend — drive, hike, pumpkin patch, all of it counts

Fall doesn't have to be the season you just admire from your car window on the way to school pickup. This is genuinely one of the best windows all year to actually go somewhere.
