When people think about family adventures, they often picture road trips, theme parks, or vacations far from home. While we absolutely love those experiences, some of our family's favorite memories happen much closer to home—with a bucket in hand and strawberry juice on our faces.
Every summer, one of our favorite traditions is heading to a local berry farm to pick fresh strawberries. What starts as a simple outing quickly turns into an adventure. The kids race down the rows searching for the biggest berries, proudly filling their baskets while sneaking just as many into their mouths. Let's be honest—we probably eat almost as many strawberries in the field as we bring home!
There is something magical about slowing down, spending time outdoors, and teaching children where their food comes from. Berry picking checks all the boxes for a perfect family adventure: fresh air, movement, learning opportunities, and plenty of delicious rewards.
But for our family, the fun doesn't stop when we leave the farm.
The real tradition begins when we get home.

Turning a Day Trip into a Family Tradition
One of the best ways to extend an adventure is to bring a piece of it home with you. After a day spent picking berries, we gather in the kitchen to create something special together.
Cooking with kids is about so much more than the finished recipe. It's measuring ingredients, sneaking tastes, making a mess, and laughing together while creating something everyone can enjoy.
For our family, there is one recipe that always makes an appearance during strawberry season.
A beloved staple from my childhood.
Strawberry Pretzel Salad.
If you've never had it before, don't let the name fool you. It's part dessert, part nostalgia, and completely delicious. The combination of salty pretzels, creamy filling, and fresh strawberries creates the perfect summer treat.
Every bite reminds me of family gatherings, summer celebrations, and the recipes that get passed down through generations.
Now I get to share that same tradition with my own children.

Why We Love Combining Adventure and Food
One thing we've learned through our travels is that experiences become even more meaningful when they engage all of our senses. The smell of fresh strawberries, the warmth of the summer sun, the excitement of finding the perfect berry, and the taste of a favorite family recipe all become part of the memory.
Children may not remember every detail of a vacation, but they'll remember the day they filled their basket with strawberries and helped make my favorite dessert.
The beauty of family adventures is that they don't have to be expensive or elaborate. Sometimes the best memories come from a local farm, a family recipe, and an afternoon spent together in the kitchen.
So this summer, consider planning an adventure that's as sweet as the dessert waiting at home.
Visit a berry farm. Pick a little too much fruit. Eat a little too much fruit. Make a family recipe. Start a tradition.
Years from now, those simple moments may become your children's favorite travel memories, too.
