Seeing My Second Home Through My Boys’ Eyes: Falling in Love with Pittsburgh All Over Again

There are some places that never really leave your heart.
For me, that place is Pittsburgh.
I never lived there, but thanks to the countless visits with family throughout my childhood, it has always felt like a second home. It’s where so many memories were made: family traditions, incredible food, unforgettable sporting events, and iconic views that somehow never get old. As an adult, I always knew I wanted to share those places with my own children.
What I didn’t expect was how much experiencing Pittsburgh through their eyes would make me fall in love with the city all over again.
There’s something incredibly special about watching your children discover the places that helped shape your childhood. Suddenly, you’re not just revisiting memories: you’re creating brand-new ones right alongside them.
Breakfast, Memories, and the Strip District

Our first stop was Pamela’s Diner, and it was the perfect way to start our adventure.
Watching the boys enjoy breakfast with the same excitement I remember feeling as a child instantly transported me back in time. Some traditions never lose their magic.
After breakfast, we wandered through the Strip District.
As a kid, I remember feeling like every store held some kind of treasure. Pittsburgh sports gear, local shops, souvenirs, candy stores, you never knew what you might discover next. Seeing the boys’ eyes light up as they looked from one store to another reminded me of exactly how I felt growing up.
The Strip District still has that same energy.
It just feels even more special now.
Friendly Competition at the Heinz History Center

One of my favorite moments happened at the Heinz History Center.
Growing up, my brother and I always found ourselves competing in the interactive Pittsburgh sports exhibits. We’d race, challenge each other, and argue over who won.
This time, it was my boys competing.
Watching them laugh, cheer each other on, and enjoy the very same exhibits brought back memories I hadn’t thought about in years. It was one of those full-circle moments that reminded me how quickly time passes and how special it is to watch traditions continue into the next generation.
Three Rivers, Baseball, and New Family Traditions

No trip to Pittsburgh feels complete without heading to the river.
Taking the Gateway Clipper across the water has always been one of my favorite ways to experience the city. There’s something unforgettable about seeing Pittsburgh from the water as you cross the three rivers and take in the skyline.
The boys couldn’t stop looking around.
Their excitement only grew once we arrived at PNC Park.
Now, thanks to their dad, they were cheering for the Cincinnati Reds instead of the Pirates. And the Reds even won so they were all happy and a little gloaty.
I may have smiled and shaken my head a little.
But watching them experience the excitement of a Major League Baseball game together mattered far more than which team they were cheering for.
The View That Never Gets Old

Some places hold a piece of your heart forever.
For me, that’s the Monongahela Incline and the overlook from Mount Washington.
No matter how many times I ride the incline, I still get excited as the city slowly comes into view. It’s one of those experiences that never loses its magic.
Seeing the boys beam with excitement as we climbed higher and higher made it even more memorable.
When we reached the top, they couldn’t stop pointing out bridges, buildings, boats, and stadiums below.
I found myself seeing the city the same way I did as a child—only this time, I was sharing it with them.
A Dream We Talked About Years Ago

Long before we had children, my husband and I visited the Carnegie Museum of Natural History while we were dating.
As we walked through the exhibits, we talked about how someday we’d bring our future kids there.
At the time, that future felt so far away.
Standing there years later, watching our boys eagerly explore each exhibit, was one of those moments that quietly tugs at your heart.
They loved all of the taxidermy animals, especially the giraffe.
It reminded me that sometimes the conversations you have early in your relationship become the memories you cherish most years later.
It Will Always Be Heinz Field

I know the official name has changed.
But to me, it will always be Heinz Field.
Walking into Acrisure Stadium brought back countless memories of Steelers games, family traditions, and hearing an entire stadium chant in unison.
Then I heard two little voices beside me.
“Here we go Steelers, here we go!”
Watching them explore the locker room, look out onto the field, and soak in every moment reminded me of the excitement I felt visiting as a child.
Now they’re building memories of their own.
Ever since we got home, the boys have been asking the same question over and over: “When can we go back to Pittsburgh?”
Every time they ask, I can’t help but smile because I remember being that same little girl asking my parents the very same thing. After every visit, I’d beg them to take us back because one trip never felt like enough. Pittsburgh wasn’t just somewhere we visited, it was a place that always felt like home.
Hearing those same words from my boys has been one of the sweetest parts of this trip. It reminds me that they’re creating the same kind of connection to Pittsburgh that I did growing up. The city that filled my childhood with so many special memories is now becoming part of theirs, and somehow that makes it feel even more like home than it ever has before.
Sometimes the Best Trips Take You Back

As parents, we’re always searching for the next big adventure. The newest attraction. The destination everyone is talking about.
But this trip reminded me that sometimes the most meaningful adventures aren’t about discovering somewhere new, they’re about returning to the places that helped shape who you are.
Sharing a place that has always felt like home allowed me to experience it in an entirely different way. Through their excitement. Their curiosity. Their wonder.
Pittsburgh will always be special to me because of the memories I made there growing up with family.
Now, it’s becoming special for another reason.
We’re creating a whole new generation of memories together.
If there’s a place that holds a special place in your heart—whether it’s your hometown, a favorite vacation destination, or somewhere that always felt like home because of the people you shared it with—I encourage you to take your kids there.
Show them your favorite breakfast spot.
Take them to the museums you loved.
Ride the attractions that still make you smile.
Cheer for your favorite team—even if they decide to cheer for the other one.
Tell them your stories.
Then step back and watch them make memories of their own.
You may be surprised to find yourself falling in love with that place all over again.
Sometimes the greatest gift we can give our children isn’t a brand-new destination, it’s sharing a place that has always held a piece of our hearts.
